Dear [their name or title],

My name is [your name, and if you are a constituent/citizen/resident say so here]. I am writing to you because of [the incident that occurred; include victim(s) name, people involved, etc].

As a concerned citizen/constituent/etc, I am very upset and disturbed by what happened. I am demanding [full investigation, charges to be brought, evidence release to the public, etc].

Thank you, and please help do the right thing and bring [victim's name] and their family the justice they deserve.

Sincerely, [your name]

Alternatively, if you're writing because you want a law/policy added or removed:
Dear [their name or title],

My name is [your name, and if you are a constituent/citizen/resident say so here]. I am writing to you because I believe [policy] must be changed.

The way our state is currently handling this policy is detrimental because [list reasons: X people can't get X thing they need, X incident proved that this policy is bad/needed, etc]. Instead I believe we should [pass X bill or make X changes] to improve the lives of our families and communities.

Please help do the right thing and make sure that [policy] is changed to help make [state] a better place.

Other important things to note (Mostly for protestors):
If filming at a protest, DO NOT film the protestors faces. Instead aim the camera at the law enforcement. If protestors faces are caught on video this could put them in danger of retaliation and hate crimes. Similarly, do not tag people in photos. This is a free open source tool to help you blur imagesIf you are at a protest and law enforcement uses tear gas, do not wash it out with milk; this causes infections. Use water. If you have contacts in, have someone without tear gas on them take it out for you.If you see the cops putting on masks, that means they are going to use tear gas. Run.How to disable a tear gas canister, and how to make an anti gas maskIf you are at a riot, consider taping the bottom of your shoes. The pattern on your shoes could be used to track you down.Do not share videos of murder. These are highly triggering and you do not need to watch someone die to fight for their right not to die.If people you know are going to protest you can help by listening in on police radio via police scanners like Broadcastify, and telling your friends what the police are doing.
